I'm in heaven because I discovered the magic of hot honey and used it to make these Chocolate Bliss Balls.

We're no stranger to energy "balls" or protein "bites" so I knew it would work. All these names apply to this recipe because it's packed with wholesome ingredients like almond butter and chia seeds and are bite-sized.
We landed on "bliss balls" because that's the emotion you'll have when you eat one! They're a healthy snack, perfect for brunch and would make an excellent gift, especially with a jar of hot honey!

What does hot honey taste like?
It's sweet and just like you'd expect honey to taste followed by a slow developing, mild heat sensation. You fully experience the sweetness of honey. After a few seconds, the heat sneaks up on you.
You'll have the same experience with these bliss balls. They have a fudge-like taste similar to our Chocolate Date Balls followed by a subtle hint of heat.
Ingredients and Substitutions
You'll need the following ingredients to make this recipe:
- oatmeal - Use the old fashioned kind, not the quick kind. There's no need to grind it.
- unsweetened cocoa powder - Make sure there is no added sugar. Extra dark chocolate cocoa powder would also be divine.
- chia seeds - These add a little crunch. If you don't have any on hand, then substitute flaxseed or shredded coconut.
- almond butter - Any type of nut butter or peanut butter, including cashew butter and sunflower seed butter, will work. You can even use a crunchy version. Note that we used our favorite sugar-free and salt-free brand.
- hot honey - you can find it in some grocery stores and online. We used Mike's Hot Honey and have a link to it in the recipe card. You can use regular honey in this recipe too.
If you can't find hot honey, make our easy DIY version by combining honey, cayenne pepper and a little apple cider vinegar. We have all the details in the recipe instructions below.
There are a few things you can do that will make this recipe even easier!
- To ensure that all of the ingredients are evenly distributed throughout, thoroughly combine the dry ingredients before adding and mixing in the wet ingredients.
- Honey will easily slide out of the measuring cup (or a measuring spoon) if you lightly spritz it with cooking spray first.
- Heat almond butter for about 20-30 seconds in a microwave safe container so it will be easier to stir into the dry ingredients.
- For uniformly sized balls, use a quick release measuring spoon to first measure out all the balls. Once the batter has been portioned out, pick up each one up to firm and roll into a ball.
- This recipe will makes 16 Tablespoon size balls or about 32 teaspoon size balls.
Store bliss balls in a sealed container in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 2 months. Although the individual ingredients in these balls don't require refrigeration, they are best cold. They tend to get sticky at room temperature.
Drizzle a little more honey on top for an extra pop of sweet and heat!
