Ingredients
Pictured are the main ingredients to make the basic keto chaffle recipe.

- 1 large Egg - 2 egg whites can be used instead.
- ½ cup shredded cheese - Finely shredded is easier to distribute in the batter than larger shreds. We used a Colby-Jack mix.
- Any type of cheese will work and can be selected based on how you plan to use the chaffles. Cheddar cheese will give it a slightly bolder flavor. Use Pepper Jack cheese for a spicy version. On the other hand, mozzarella cheese will result in a mild taste and is perfect for a sweeter version.
- Almond Flour - finely blanched or coconut flour.
- We found 2 Tablespoons to be the perfect amount. However, you can add less or none at all.
- The original chaffle recipe (and I don't know who to credit, or I surely would, along with a big hug) only calls for egg and cheese. It's also delicious but a little eggy!
If you're serving many people or doing meal prep, scale up the ingredient quantities to make multiple servings at once.
You can mix in other seasonings and spices, too, and come up with different variations. You can also play around with the types of cheese. But I guarantee you'll be pretty happy with these basic savory chaffles.
How to make a Sweet Chaffle
If you want to make a sweet version, use mozzarella cheese and add a teaspoon of sweetener to the basic recipe. That's it! You can also stir in stevia-sweetened chocolate chips. This version is perfect for topping with syrup, nuts, and fruit, just like you would for a regular waffle.
Best Waffle Maker
The Dash Mini Waffle Maker is perfect for this recipe and concept. It doesn't break the bank. It's small, so it stows away easily. Finally, it makes perfectly sized portions. I highly recommend it! My kids took theirs with them to college, so I had to buy one of my own!
A regular-sized or Belgian waffle maker can be used to make this recipe too! You may need to play around with the amount of batter to get it just right!
Directions with Pictures
These are the easy steps to make the recipe in a mini waffle iron.

- Preheat the waffle iron.
- Stir egg, shredded cheese, and almond flour together in a small bowl. It will be a little thick.
- Open the waffle iron and mist it with cooking spray. Transfer half the batter (which is about ¼ cup) into the waffle maker and spread it out.
- Note: If desired, use a silicone spatula to spread the batter to the edges of the waffle maker for a nice, clean edge. This is just for looks. It will taste great either way.
- Allow the chaffle to cook for about 4 minutes. Remove with silicone tongs. Repeat the process with the rest of the batter! After removing them, they will continue to crisp and firm for a few minutes.
After the first time, you'll get the timing and process down. I promise!
Note: If using a different type of waffle maker, follow your appliance's directions. The general process works the same way. I've made these in a Belgian Waffle Maker and was able to use all the batter at once.
How do you know when it's done?
You'll know that a chaffle is done when the steam stops escaping from the sides of the waffle maker. It takes about 4 minutes in the Dash model. It doesn't hurt to leave it in for just a little longer! You can even open and check at about 3 minutes without causing any harm.
Ways to Use Keto Chaffles
The fun part comes when it's time to eat them. They are delicious hot out of the waffle maker. Other ideas:
- Base for pizza
- Hamburger bun
- Sandwich bread for fillings like keto egg salad
- Grilled cheese
- Bagel
- Breakfast sandwich
- Waffle topped with low-carb syrup and your favorite toppings. This one is perfect when you use mild cheese.

Storage and Reheating
- Store - Place chaffles in an airtight storage container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat - Reheat in a toaster oven, toaster, or air fryer. The microwave is not recommended.
- Freeze - Chaffles may be frozen in an airtight storage container for up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen or after defrosting in the refrigerator overnight.
